Moles & Skin Lesions

Moles & Skin Lesions

Moles and skin growths are common — but not all are harmless. Some can change over time or signal more serious skin conditions, including skin cancer. At South Florida Dermatology, we offer thorough skin evaluations to assess moles, lesions, and any spots you’re unsure about. Early detection is the best protection.

What Are Moles and Skin Lesions?

Moles (also known as nevi) are pigmented growths on the skin that can be flat or raised, and are usually brown or black. Most are benign, but some can change into melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Skin lesions is a broader term that refers to any abnormal area of skin, including:

  • Birthmarks

  • Freckles

  • Lentigines (age spots)

  • Keratoses (seborrheic or actinic)

  • Skin tags

  • Cysts

  • Warts

  • Suspicious growths or bumps

When Should You Be Concerned?

You should schedule a skin check if you notice:

  • A mole that is new, growing, or changing in shape or color

  • Asymmetry or irregular borders

  • Bleeding, itching, or crusting

  • Multiple moles that look different from each other (“ugly duckling”)

  • A family or personal history of skin cancer

  • Lesions that don’t heal or recur

What to Expect at South Florida Dermatology

Our dermatology team performs full-body skin exams and uses tools like dermatoscopy to evaluate suspicious lesions. If needed, we may recommend:

  • Biopsy (to test for abnormal or cancerous cells)

  • Surgical removal of atypical moles or lesions

  • Cryotherapy (for warts or benign growths)

  • Topical treatments or monitoring over time

We also help patients track changes through photography and regular follow-up skin checks.

Not sure if a mole is safe?

Our dermatologists can examine and guide you on what’s normal and what’s not. Don’t wait — early evaluation could be life-saving.
